Butlins Refurbishes its Centre Stage Arena in Skegness
This month Britain’s favourite holiday resort, Butlins, unveils the first phase of its refurbished Centre Stage Arena in Skegness, now complete with a new floating effect mezzanine floor, making it one of the largest resort entertainment venues in the UK.
Drilling 16m foundations into the ground, our design and build company, CuratedSpace, constructed a huge 18m by 41m steel structure inside the 16,500 sq ft entertainment venue in less than three weeks, whilst the arena was still open for public events at weekends. This colossal piece of construction formed the basis of the brand new mezzanine floor, which has been carefully designed and constructed to give the impression of a floating floor.

Part of a three phase project, the new mezzanine level has been created to accommodate 205 seated VIP guests. The floor incorporates raised seating to give VIP guests the optimum viewing platform and is encompassed with 130 linear metres of frameless glass balustrade to ensure a clear view of the performance stage below is always visible.
A new bar area including a bottle wash and store room was installed on this new floor along with dimmable lighting, a speaker system and a fire sprinkler system to the underside. A new fire exit staircase was also built as well as a main customer entrance staircase, which wraps around a disabled access lift.
In addition to the new floor level, the design team enhanced the stage with 110 linear metres of colour changing LED rope light, reconfigured the ground floor toilet blocks with new entrances to improve customer access in and out of the venue and created a new designated baby change room, to complete the first phase fit out.
The plan for phase two will include a complete revamp of the whole ground floor; new entrances will be introduced, the existing bars will be replaced to match the mezzanine bar and brand new toilets and carpets will be fitted throughout. The third and final phase will look at refurbishing all public areas around the entertainment venue, due to be completed by the Spring of 2012.
The entire venue refurbishment will ensure that the Centre Stage Arena at Skegness remains Butlins’ premier entertainment venue, and continues to be regularly used for family shows and concerts during the holiday seasons as well as host to a number of external conferences and events for up to 3,500 people.
