Two P’s in a Pod

BY James Wilkins

28th April 2010

Purpose, the noun, is defined as the object toward which one strives or for which something exists; an aim or a goal, while ‘personal’ (adj) means belonging to or intended for a particular person and no-one else.  But what do these two words mean when talking about effective communications?

Used individually they’re useful tools to entice an audience. Messages of purpose denote action, a call to arms for a workforce to play its part in the bigger picture. Personal offers the bespoke tailored approach in speaking to employees as individuals and making them feel valued. But when you combine these two key ingredients, you can create truly triumphant communications.

So next time you need to deliver a business message, think how you can give your audience a sense of purpose and how to make it both personal to the delegates and the speaker delivering the messages.

Purposeful and personal communication helps delegates to define their place in a business and understand their role in the bigger scheme.

The audience needs to feel the messages are relevant to them.  If they are engaged they are more likely to be influenced and then you have real two-way communication.  The ultimate function of communication goes beyond effectively conveying ideas, but is actually about making an impact on daily attitudes and behaviour.

For many a recession is new territory and the challenges and opportunities faced are a little unclear. That’s why at this point in time winning communications matter more than ever.

Confidence is lacking as business leaders carefully tiptoe their way through unfamiliar landscape and attempt to lead their troops to safety.  It leaves employees feeling nervous too.

So when it’s time to face the music, as well as your audience, don’t ask yourself “how can I make communications effective and entertaining?” Ask yourself this instead: “Does this piece of communication have purpose and is it personal?” If it is, chances are you and your audience will get along like two P’s in a pod.
