Doing the moral thing, community spirit and cooperative-style ways of working might sound warm and fluffy; however, customers are progressively connecting to these ideas both on a personal and business level, so we’d all be fools to turn our noses up at the inevitable culture that it’s likely to bring about.
One of the main reasons for this renewed interest in locality and trading within communities is the response to and rejection of mass commercialisation, the ‘tescopoly’ as it were. The idea that one supplier in London gets all the business in the south just because they are the most well established does indeed leave a bad taste in ones mouth.
Local business connections and trade partner models are likely to strengthen, not just because of this moral objection but because the increase in fuel costs means it makes economic sense. With these increases it will only be a short period of time before a regional supplier will be the only commercial option.
Making decisions such as these means the industry will manoeuvre progressively away from a close network of regular suppliers and broaden the supply chains. The ongoing business benefit for customers will be the intellectual thinking and creativity that can be deployed in both solution and supply values.
Knowing the local trends, the local knowledge and having the local responsive speed is a benefit, as is the connection to the customer, but one size won't fit all. Paying attention to shifts in the economy and fuel prices is paramount to choosing wisely, whether that is locally or further afield.
If this simple principle is taken heed of we can all be; sustainable, moral and better value for money than we’ve ever been.
